Do Orchids Bloom More Than Once?
If your orchid has finished flowering and you’re left wondering whether it will ever bloom again — you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked, and the answer is a cheerful yes — orchids can and do bloom more than once!
But like all good things, it takes a little patience and the right care. Here’s everything you need to know.
First Things First: Don’t Throw It Away!
It’s surprisingly common for people to assume that once the flowers fall, the plant has reached the end of its life. Not true! Your orchid is very much alive — it’s simply entering a resting phase known as dormancy.
This is a natural part of the orchid’s life cycle. Think of it as your plant recharging its batteries before its next display of blooms.
How Long Until It Flowers Again?
Most Phalaenopsis orchids (the type we grow at Love Orchids) will bloom once a year, often for several months at a time. After blooming, they typically rest for around 6–9 months before flowering again — though this can vary slightly depending on conditions and care.
What Should I Do After the Flowers Drop?
Here’s how to encourage your orchid to bloom again:
1. Trim the Flower Spike (Carefully) Once the last flower has faded, check the spike (the long green stem where the blooms appeared).
• If it’s still green and healthy, you can cut it back to just above a node (a small bump on the stem). This may encourage a secondary spike to grow.
• If the spike has turned brown and dry, it’s best to trim it right down to the base — your orchid will produce a fresh spike when it’s ready.
2. Be Patient, Not Pushy During its resting phase, your orchid may grow new roots or leaves. This is a good sign that it’s building strength for its next bloom.
3. Keep the Care Consistent
• Light: Bright but indirect light is ideal.
• Water: Allow the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings.
• Feeding: A gentle orchid feed every few weeks can help support growth.
The Signs a Bloom is Coming
Keep an eye out for a small green spike emerging from the base of the plant — it often looks like a new root at first. This is the exciting first sign that new blooms are on their way!
